A faint crater glow was seen at the summit of Kanlaon Volcano from 3:40 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. Monday, June 29, the Philippine Institute of Volcano and Seismology volcanologist said.
Mari-Andylene Quintia, Phivolcs resident volcanologist, said that the crater glow usually occurs when the magma of the volcano is at a shallow level.
This could be a precursor to an explosive or magmatic eruption, Quintia said.
It could mean that the magma is nearing the crater’s summit but we cannot say if an explosion will happen or not, she said.
Phivolcs will continue to monitor the crater because if it continues and intensifies that could lead to the raising of the volcano’s alert level, Quintia said.
Kanlaon is currently under Alert Level 2.
In May there was also a crater glow that lasted for two to three days at Kanlaon and disappeared.*
