Elderly woman hit by truck dies

A 75-year-old woman was killed after she was struck by a truck while crossing a road in Sitio Ulalod, Brgy. Oringao, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, on Saturday, July 27.

Police identified the victim as Norma Dagnao, a resident of the area, who had just exited a private vehicle and was crossing the street when the incident occurred.

The truck involved was a Fuso Canter driven by 48-year-old Hadjie Ortiaga, a resident of Purok 2, Barangay Tiling, Cauayan.

Kabankalan Police Chief LtCol. Roberto Indiape Jr. said Ortiaga was driving through a curve when he failed to notice the elderly woman crossing.

He stepped on the brakes but was unable to stop in time, hitting the victim.

“The area is a known blind curve and has limited lighting, which may have contributed to the accident,” Indiape added.

Dagnao was rushed to the Lorenzo Zayco District Hospital where she was declared dead.

Police said that Ortiaga and the victim’s relatives have agreed to a settlement and no criminal charges will be filed.

Indiape reminded motorists to be especially cautious in areas with poor visibility and to always yield to pedestrians.

He also urged the public, especially the elderly, to ensure it is safe to cross by checking both sides of the road.*
