DSB resident hacked dead for uprooting corn

A man was killed after he was hacked by his companion during a drunken altercation reportedly triggered by the uprooting of corn plants in Purok Buri, Brgy. Kumaliskis , Don Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental, late Monday night, July 28.

Police identified the victim as Lodrigo Alferez, 46, a resident of Brgy. Kumaliskis.

Maj. Ryan Villasario, Don Salvador Benedicto Police Chief, said the victim died after he was hacked in the neck and the side of his head by suspect Johnny Lina, 54, who is now under police custody.

The two had been drinking earlier that evening at the residence of a certain Junrey Lina and after their session, the pair decided to walk home together.

On their way, Alferez reportedly uprooted some corn plants, prompting Lina to reprimand him, saying the plants belonged to a friend.

The confrontation escalated when the victim allegedly pulled out a knife and attempted to stab the suspect.

In response, Lina drew a bolo from his waist and struck Alferez twice, causing his immediate death.

The victim was rushed to the Don Salvador Benedicto Municipal Health Unit where he was declared dead.

Villasario said police arrested Lina in a hot-pursuit operation and recovered the weapon used in the incident.

A homicide charge is being prepared against him, the police said.*
