Police have identified the driver allegedly involved in a hit-and-run incident that killed a 55-year-old man in Brgy. Lopez Jaena, Sagay City, on Oct. 26.
The victim was identified as “Edwin”, a resident of Purok Balibag, Brgy. Lopez Jaena.
Sagay City police chief Lt. Col. Alvimar Flores said investigators located the driver in Brgy. Puey and recovered the Honda sedan believed to have been involved in the incident.
The driver voluntarily went to the Sagay City Police Station for questioning and admitted that he was driving the vehicle that hit Ambrosio, Flores said.
Police identified the driver through information from concerned citizens and public appeals made through radio interviews.
Investigators were also aided by a side mirror recovered from the scene, which Flores said matched the vehicle later located by police.
According to the driver’s account to investigators, he allegedly did not immediately notice that he had hit someone because loud music was playing inside the vehicle.
Flores said the driver later learned about the incident through news reports but did not immediately approach authorities because he was afraid.
The incident happened at around 4 a.m. while the vehicle was traveling from Sagay City proper toward Brgy. Puey.
Flores said are where the incident occurred was dark, while investigators are also looking into the vehicle’s speed at the time.
Police have informed Ambrosio’s family that the driver has been identified and the vehicle recovered.
Authorities are awaiting the family’s decision on whether to pursue charges.
Flores said a warrantless arrest can no longer be made because the allowable period has already lapsed, and any case will have to undergo the regular filing process.
Police withheld the driver’s name while the case is being processed.*
