Crater glow observed at Kanlaon for second consecutive night

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a reddish glow was again observed at Kanlaon Volcano on Monday night, signaling continued activity at the summit.

This “banaag,” or crater glow, was visible to the naked eye for the second consecutive evening.

The phenomenon was captured in a photo by an observer in Canlaon City at around  10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Monday,  Mari-Andylene Quintia, a Phivolcs resident volcanologist, said.

Phivolcs officials are now closely tracking the activity to determine the volcano’s next move.

Ma. Antonia Bornas, chief of the Phivolcs Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division, stated on Monday that the agency will observe Kanlaon over the coming nights. T

he primary concern is whether the glow becomes sustained or intensifies, as such developments could serve as a precursor to a volcanic eruption, she said.*
