The Negros Occidental provincial government commemorated the 81st Negros Island Victory Day by paying tribute to the courage and sacrifices of World War II veterans who fought for the country’s liberation at the Capitol Park in Bacolod City, Wednesday morning, Sept. 9.
Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson, in his speech, cited the enduring legacy of the freedom fighters.
“Eighty-one years have passed since our island was liberated from Japanese forces. Much has changed since then, but the courage and sacrifices of those who lived through those difficult years should never be forgotten,” Lacson said.
The governor expressed deep gratitude to the veterans, post-war District Commanders, and retired officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) for their dedicated service and commitment to safeguarding the public.
He highlighted that the courage displayed during the war serves as an example for all generations and continues to inspire present-day soldiers and freedom fighters who defend the nation from oppression.
“To our beloved Veterans, and to those who gave their lives on the battlefield, our debt to you is one that no words can fully express and no gesture can ever repay,” Lacson stated. “But we can honor your memory by carrying the same love of country and courage that guided you—and by living our lives in a way that proves we are worthy heirs to the freedom you fought and sacrificed for.”
Reaffirming the provincial government’s full support for the veterans, Lacson called for a round of applause for the veterans present at the ceremony and reminded citizens to remain vigilant in protecting their freedom.
“May this commemoration remind us that freedom is never something we can take for granted,” he urged. “It must be protected from threats that come from outside, from within our society, and even from our own indifference when we fail to recognize its value”.*
