Negros Occidental recorded 116 fireworks-related injuries from December 21 to January 6, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) reported on Thursday.

Bago City had the highest number of recorded incidents with 27, followed by Himamaylan City and Silay City with nine each, and E.B. Magalona and Kabankalan City with eight cases each, the PHO said.

The PHO reported that 67 of the cases were classified as “active involvement,” meaning the victims were injured while personally lighting the fireworks. The remaining 49 cases were passive, involving individuals who were injured by fireworks ignited by others.

“Triangulo” was identified as the cause of the highest number of injuries.

The most common type of injury recorded was blast or burn wounds without amputation, accounting for 83 cases.

The PHO also noted that 26 of the victims were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

Most of the injured individuals belonged to the 11 to 20 age group, it added.*
