Bacolod launches community flood early warning system

Mayor Greg Gasataya officially kicked off the city’s new Community-Based Flood Early Warning System project Thursday, October 22, as part of the city’s ongoing work to strengthen disaster preparedness.

The project is designed to give communities earlier, more reliable flood warnings through better technology. It will be rolled out across 19 locations, with plans to install 33 monitoring and warning devices and 12 smart switches in barangay halls, gyms, schools, and other key sites, a press release from the Bacolod City Communications Office said Friday.

The system will use automated rain gauges, weather stations, water-level and air-quality monitors, and warning sirens loud enough — up to 130 decibels — to be heard clearly in the community.

Data will feed into a unified online platform, with plans to link it to the city’s G-App so information is shared quickly and response teams can coordinate more effectively, the press release said.

“This project is very timely and relevant as it is extremely necessary for the City to have advance and reliable information for more efficient disaster response,”  City  Administrator  Steven Mark Mayo said.

The project is expected to take 180 days to complete, from site validation and system design all the way through installation, testing, training, and turnover.

Once fully operational, the system will provide real-time alerts on river water levels, rainfall volume, and air quality – turning accurate data into timely warnings that help families and neighborhoods prepare and stay safe., Mayo said.*
