
Bacolod Councilor Elmer Sy who was undergoing dialysis twice a week and was up for a kidney transplant passed away at the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center in Bacolod City Friday, June 25.
“We take note that Councilor Elmer was a COVID-19 victim and we should be reminded how dangerous our times are. May he serve as a medium for all of us to remember that we must always follow health protocols,” Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia said.
Sy, 65, was hit with COVID-19 last week and was suffering from numerous other ailments, a colleague of his said.
Leonardia said they were stunned by the news that Sy had passed away.
“We lost a dedicated public servant…he lived up to his words ‘less talk, more action’…that was how he performed,” Leonardia said.
“Our people had elected him again and again because they saw his sincerity, dedication, and performance,” the mayor added.
“The city mourns his passing away. But his legacy of dedicated public service will always be remembered by this grateful city,” Leonardia said.
Bacolod Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran said Sy helped Bacolodnons through thousands of blood donations, college scholarships, and water distribution projects through the Sy Boon Pit Foundation
Sy passionately and selflessly served Bacolod City in his own way, Familiaran said.
Bacolod Rep. Greg Gasataya said Sy “will always be remembered as a public servant who humbly advocated and fought for the welfare of Bacolodnons.”
Councilor Cindy Rojas said “It is a sad day for Bacolod City and Sangguniang Panlungsod to have lost a good man and a fellow comrade. A man of few words, but a man who made a big difference in a lot of people’s lives…he will be missed.”
Councilor Renecito Novero said Sy “was a silent worker but faithful to his task. A generous man. A big loss to the city.”
“Less talk more action is dead…’long live less talk, more action’,” Councilor Archie Baribar said.*
