The average price of pork in Negros Occidental has dropped by P5 a kilo, and could further decline this year, Dr Placeda Lemana, provincial veterinarian, said Tuesday, January 9.
She attributed the drop to a decrease in the demand for pork after the holidays.
The current pork prices that are still considered high could further go down with the resumption of restocking of pigs in the second and third quarter that would increase the production of pork, she said.
Hog raising halted last year when African Swine Fever and hog cholera caused thousands of pigs in Negros Occidental to die, Lemana said.
Lemana last week said that ASF and hog cholera in Negros Occidental is now under control with no new deaths reported.
The Office of the Provincial Veterinarian monitoring on Monday, January 8, showed that highest price for pork in the province was in Bago City at P380 a kilo and the cheapest was in Don Salvador Benedicto at P275 a kilo.
The live weight price for pork was at P180 a kilo in Moises Padilla and P160 a kilo in Don Salvador Benedicto and Calatrava, Lemana said.*
