AstraZeneca vaccination starts, more Sinovac supply arrives

Bacolod City and Negros Occidental began their rollout of AstraZeneca vaccines for health workers and received 3,430 additional Sinovac vaccines from the Department of Health on Saturday, March 13.

Eight doctors and five barangay health workers were among the first recipients of the AstraZeneca vaccines at the Bacolod City Government Center Saturday, Dr. Chris Sorongon, Bacolod Emergency Operations Center deputy for medical data and analysis, said.

The first to receive an AstraZeneca vaccine at the BCGC rites was Dr. Benjamin Gonzaga, and the first members of a family of doctors to be inoculated were Eli, Joyce and Joseph Cong.

The Bacolod barangay health workers who were the first to be vaccinated with AstraZeneca vaccines were Excelsa Landero, Virginia Magbanua, Rupina Arceña, Annabelle Regacho, and Suzette Ico.

Their AstraZeneca vaccines were part of the 312 vials containing 3,120 doses that arrived in Bacolod City on Friday.

Sorongon said Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital received 41 AstraZeneca vials, Riverside Medical Center Inc. – 71, Bacolod Adventist Medical Center Inc. – 34, and The Doctors Hospital -10.

Bacolod City also received 840 vials of CoronaVac, the vaccine developed by Chinese company Sinovac, on Saturday, City Administrator Em Ang said. Each vial contains one dose.

Ang said the DOH assured that more vaccines will be sent to Bacolod City.

Sorongon said the Sinovac vaccines that arrived Saturday will be for health care workers at isolation facilities, the City Health Office, contact tracers and doctors who work at clinics.

Meanwhile, an additional 2,590 Sinovac vials for Negros Occidental health workers arrived on Saturday.

The provincial government has so far received 5,180 Sinovac vials from the national government.

Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz said the AstraZeneca and Sinovac vaccines were administered on health workers during the weekend and will continue this week.*
