Army nabs 4 CPP-NPA rebels with high-powered firearms

Four alleged Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army rebels with high-powered firearms were apprehended by the Army’s 11th Infantry (Lapu-Lapu) Battalion and Philippine National Police in Sitio, Tamlang, Barangay Talalak, Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental on Wednesday, August 18.

The troops conducted a strike operation in response to information given by the local populace on the presence of armed rebels in the area.

Lt. Col. Roderick Salayo, 11th IB acting commanding officer, identified them as Roel Casilao alias Garry, Allan Ybañez alias Ban, Joselie Lasas alias Tete, and Jestoni Lasas alias Tata, of the Local Guerilla Unit, South Eastern Front.

Confiscated from their possession were two M-14 rifles, one M-16 rifle, one shotgun, three magazines of an M-14, assorted M-16 ammunition, two handcuffs, six disposable syringes, assorted flash drives, a map of Negros Oriental, assorted medicines, and subversive documents.

The Lasas have existing warrants of arrest for a murder case.

“The apprehension of these CPP-NPA Terrorists will not be the last. There will be more surrenders and apprehensions in the coming days as we intensify our combat operations against the CNTs in our area. We will be relentless in pursuing the communist-terrorists not only to capture but also to force them to surrender,” Salayo said.

Brig. Gen. Leonardo Peña, 302nd Infantry Brigade commander, lauded the 11IB for apprehending the rebels and preventing them from casting more terror. He also attributed the successful operation to the vigilance and cooperation of the civilian populace by giving accurate information to the troops.

“A CPP-NPA Terrorists-free Negros is achievable with you (Negrenses) on our side. Let us continue our effective collaborative efforts to allow peace and progress to prosper in this island,” Peña added.*
