Almost entire pig population of San Enrique wiped out: PVO

Various hog diseases have almost wiped out the entire pig population of San Enrique town in Negros Occidental.

Pig deaths in San Enrique hit 2,671 or 99.22 percent of its entire 2,692 population, leaving only 21 survivors on Sunday, June 11, a Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) report showed.

This has affected 508 hog raisers in ten barangays in San Enrique.

The total pig deaths in 126 barangays in 16 local government units in Negros Occidental on Sunday were 12,139 or 9.26 percent of the total hog population of the province.

This has affected 2,294 hog raisers whose losses have hit P136,311,800, the PVO reported.

The Negros Occidental local government unit with the second most number of pig casualties is Bago City with 2,264, followed by Valladolid – 2,132, Pontevedra – 1,204, EB Magalona – 908, Pulupandan – 833, La Carlota City – 468, Ilog – 373, Manapla – 322, Kabankalan – 258, Binalbagan – 234, Cadiz City – 169, Silay City – 132, Murcia – 96 Talisay City – 60, and Hinigaran – 15, the PVO reported.

There have been African Swine Fever positive cases in Bacolod and Victorias cities, and Pulupandan.

The PVO has attributed most of the pig deaths in the province to hog cholera.*
