At least 52 impounded dogs, who are on death row at the Bacolod City pound, need help, BACH Project PH, a non-profit animal welfare organization, said.

This is why the group, in coordination with the City Veterinary Office, is holding a pre-Valentine’s Day adoption drive at the dog pound at Alunan Road in Barangay 35 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 13.

“Forget chocolates and flowers. The best way to show your love is with a dog,” the group said in a Facebook post.

“Dogs at the Bacolod City pound are facing a terrifying reality which is euthanasia. Many deserving furry friends may never meet the family of their dreams. Love is in the air, it is everywhere you look at the pound. Take one look into the eyes of the impounded dogs and you will see the love for a human/family of their own,” they said.

They added, “finding the right pet will be like Valentine’s day every day for the rest of their life. They have so much love to give, it would be like finding a piece of your heart you didn’t know you were missing.”

If you cannot adopt, consider fostering. If you cannot foster, donate so they can continue feeding them while they wait for their forever homes, the group said.

NO TO GUNSHOT

Malou Perez of PAWSsion Project, another animal welfare group that is based in Bacolod, appealed to Mayor Evelio Leornadia to look into the situation at the city dog pound, where dogs are shot to death.

“These animals have lives too. This has been going on for years. Killing dogs by gunshot is legal, unfortunately, because our laws are f* up, but as mayor, you have the power to change this. You are lucky you have so many working animal advocates in this city. We are all willing to help the city pound, we are all willing to donate when we can (when in fact, the city pound has to have a budget) and we are all willing to do everything for these poor animals,” she said in a Facebook post.

She lamented that the animal groups could not save and rescue all of the dogs at the pound, and that free and subsidized spay and neuter programs are needed.

“Irresponsible owners should be penalized. Owners who surrender their dogs in pounds have to face consequences. Yes, we are as concerned as you stray haters about the welfare of people. No one wants kids or other people bitten by strays but rabies is not inborn and impounding and killing them is not a solution. Neither all of us rescuing them. It will never end. We have to go back to the root of the problem,” she said.

She called on the lawmakers to look into animal welfare.

She also called on the animal lovers to consider voting for people who love animals and people who take action in the next election.

“You have no idea how frustrating it is for me, as a resident of Bacolod to be able to do more in other places, because the city here chooses to do nothing,” she said.*
