4-year-old girl dies, 4 injured in Pontevedra road crash

A 4-year-old girl died while her mother, her mother’s co-worker, and two others were injured in a motorcycle crash at the provincial road in Hacienda Merced, Brgy. Don Salvador Benedicto (DSB), Pontevedra, Negros Occidental, Sunday night, Oct. 19.

Police identified the driver of the blue Suzuki motorcycle as 34-year-old Gerald Jungco, of Brgy. Manghanoy, La Castellana.

With him were his co-worker’s wife, Lemelyn Lopez, and her four-year-old daughter, who was seated in front.

Initial investigation showed that Jungco was overtaking another motorcycle when he miscalculated and collided head-on with a blue-and-black Kawasaki Bajaj tricycle driven by Jonel Nietes, 39, with his brother, Jay Nietes, 42, on board Both are residents of Brgy. Talaptap, La Castellana.

All five sustained injuries but the 4-year-old girl was declared dead-on-arrival at the Don Salvador Benedicto Hospital in La Carlota City.

Jungco, Lopez, and the two tricycle occupants were treated for their injuries.

Police said the crash was caused by a miscalculated overtaking maneuver.

Both vehicles are now under the custody of the Pontevedra Municipal Police Station for further investigation.*
