Two persons were arrested in Negros Oriental for violation of the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) gun ban this week, a police official said on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
Lt. Stephen Polinar, spokesperson of the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NOPPO), said the suspects were arrested separately Monday evening.
One was arrested at a checkpoint and the other during a request for police assistance after the suspect allegedly fired a gun, he said.
These two arrests bring to five the total number of apprehended gun ban violators in Negros Oriental since the start of the election period on Jan. 12.
“We have filed three complaints for violation of the gun ban and illegal possession of firearms pursuant to Republic Act 10591 (The Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act),” Polinar said.
At around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, police arrested a 45-year-old male in Barangay Kabukalan, Sta. Catalina town, after the barangay captain called for police assistance after seeing the suspect with a firearm.
A .38 caliber revolver without pertinent documents was recovered from the suspect’s possession.
Meanwhile, police and 11th Infantry Battalion soldiers manning a checkpoint along the highway in Barangay Talungon, Bais City, arrested a 50-year-old male resident of Mabinay City the same night.
Confiscated from the suspect was one undocumented .45 caliber handgun with two magazines and eight rounds of live ammunition.
Complaints for violation of the Comelec gun ban and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition will be filed against the two.*PNA
