2 men found dead in rivers

Two men were found dead in rivers in Toboso and San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

In Toboso, a 56-year-old laborer was found floating along the Salamanca River in Sitio Banquirohan, Barangay Salamanca, at around 8:30 a.m., the police reported.

The police said the victim, a resident of Escalante City, was seen floating under a bridge pillar and was retrieved by personnel of the Toboso Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

Authorities said the victim was identified by his nephew.

Police said the victim was known to frequently consume alcohol without eating and had been seen behaving erratically days before the incident.

The victim was brought to the Toboso Municipal Health Unit but was declared dead by the attending physician.

Meanwhile, in San Carlos City, an 83-year-old man was found dead at around 12:30 p.m. in a river in Sitio Talave, Brgy. Punao.

Police said a concerned citizen reported the incident, prompting authorities to respond and conduct an investigation.

The victim was identified by family members, who told police that he frequently drank alcohol and often swam in the river.

Authorities said the victim was found floating near the riverbank with no visible wounds on his body.

Police said the incident is believed to be a case of drowning.*
